I got a request for Joe & the Juice’s Trust Your Gut smoothie on my YouTube channel and was more than happy to oblige. One of the key ingredients is kefir, which I’ve been enthusiastically fermenting for years.
Joe & the Juice use Biotiful or Lifeway kefir (the plain kind). If you find yourself making this smoothie a lot, I’d highly recommend fermenting your own. I’ve written about it and made a quick video overview, as well as a full guide.
The fibre powder that Joe & the Juice use comes from Myota, which I didn’t buy due to its price (£50 for a one-off purchase or £112.50 for a three month supply). I was happy to splurge on blue spirulina for Joe's Unicorn Tears protein shake because it’s the star ingredient. For Trust Your Gut, I felt it was reasonable to substitute psyllium husk instead. I appreciate that it’s not the same. Myota contains five kinds of fibre, which will feed a wider range of your good gut bacteria. It may be the better choice if you’re prone to bloating or have IBS-like symptoms. Psyllium husk is merely a single source of fibre. I’m a big fan, though, and buy the organic, non-powdered kind from BuyWholefoodsOnline. 500g costs around £12 and lasts for ages.
I can’t not mention how pretty Trust Your Gut is (pink swirls ♥). It tastes wonderfully tangy, thanks to the kefir, beetroot powder and strawberries. Protein powder and nut butter are optional (but great) additions; they basically turn Trust Your Gut into Beets & Berries, which is no bad thing.
A confession: we don’t live near a Joe & the Juice so I haven’t been able to try Trust Your Gut in store. Some internet sleuthing unearthed the official recipe, so if you try it, I’d love to know whether it’s like the original.
Notes
It's tricky to provide exact quantities for the kefir and pea protein milk. Joe & the Juice use the blender as a measuring jug. The pea milk goes in last and tops the ingredients up to the 16 oz (450 ml) mark.

Ingredients
Trust Your Gut
- up to 8 oz kefir (set aside 2-3 oz for swirling)
- 6 ice cubes
- 6-7 strawberries
- 1 piece banana
- 1 scoop date purée (or 1-2 pitted dates)
- 1 tsp fibre powder (Myota, but I use psyllium husk)
- 2 tsp beetroot powder
- up to 16 oz Sproud m*lk (pea protein milk)
Optional extras
- 1 scoop protein powder (I use pea or soya)
- 1 tbsp almond butter
Date purée (can be doubled)
- 150g (¾ cup) whole pitted dates
- 125ml (½ cup) freshly boiled water
Method
Trust Your Gut
- Basic Trust Your Gut:
- Set aside 2-3 oz (around 2 shots) of kefir in a small jug or cup.
- Add 6 ice cubes to your blender, then pour in kefir up to the 8 oz mark (or 220 ml mark). Add 6-7 strawberries, 1 piece of banana, 1 heaped tablespoon of date purée (or 1-2 whole, pitted dates), 1 teaspoon of fibre powder (Myota, but I use psyllium husk) and 2 teaspoons of beetroot powder. Pour Sproud m*lk up to the 16 oz mark (or 450 ml mark).
- Optional extras: Add any extras like a scoop of protein powder or 1 tablespoon of almond butter, if using. Blend until smooth.
- Swirl half of the reserved kefir around the inside of a 500ml glass. Pour in half of the smoothie then swirl in the remaining kefir. Top up with the remaining smoothie.
Date purée (alternative to using whole, pitted dates)
- Soak 150g (¾ cup) of whole pitted dates in 125ml (½ cup) of freshly boiled water for 10 minutes (skip the soak if you have a high-powered blender).
- Blend until smooth. I have to stop the blender periodically and scrape down the sides.
- Transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 3 months.
